Bearing fruit in the Lord

Second Corinthians 3:17 says, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.    The Bible not only tells us that the Holy Spirit is God, but it also says He is Somebody, not something.

Patience is one of the fruit of the Spirit. We live in an instant society.   We have instant potatoes, coffee, pudding, TV dinners, and replays.     Try this experiment. Wait at a stoplight, and when it turns green count, “One, two, three, and so on, before you go.   See how many times the people behind you honk before you start driving.

We are in such a hurry that we don’t have time for really important things, such as God and family.   Or, we take time with God, but it’s not a lot of time.   I’m late for work, school or I’m tired, so I rush through my time with the Lord.

We’re also impatient with God.  We want instant answers to prayer, instant understanding of God and His will, and instant results in our service to Him.   We say, “Lord, grant me patience and I want it right now!”

We need to slow down and begin to concentrate on the important areas of life.   “And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:10Colossians 1:10

).    Does that verse describe your life? That kind of life doesn’t happen overnight.   It’s a process.   You have to be patient with yourself.   When things don’t go the way we want right away, we get frustrated and quit.   We forget that God is in the business of foundation building, which takes time.

Check out these individuals:

Moses was eighty years old before he began his dealing with Pharaoh.

Paul had to wait seventeen years after his conversion before he did anything the New Testament lists as meaningful.

John was a senior citizen before he wrote a word of the New Testament.

Sarah was so old that when she was told she was finally going to have a child, she laughed.

Abraham didn’t have a son until he was one hundred years old, even thought God promised him that he would be the “father of many nations”.

Jesus waited thirty years before He began His public ministry.

So be patient.   God will use you, but you need to actively seek Him and faithfully follow Him.   Every once in a while, look back and see how far you’ve come.

You need to be patient with others.  Jesus didn’t just see people the way they were – as prostitutes, tax collectors, or ignorant fisher men – He saw what they could become.   Instead of just looking at people as they are now, try to imagine what they could become if God got hold of their lives.   Ask Jesus for His eyes, so you can see people the way He does.  Then be patient with them!

says, “Be still, and know that I am God”.   God knows what He is doing, so you can trust Him, even though you can’t always understand the whys or hows.   We can be assured that He is working things out for His glory and our eternal good.   Be patient, relax, and remember Psalm 46:10Psalm 46:10
